The Deep Reef exhibit at the Maui Ocean Center offers visitors a glimpse into the unique and mysterious environment that lies approximately 100 feet below the ocean’s surface. Unlike the shallower reef environments, the deep reef is characterized by a lack of sunlight, making it challenging for photosynthetic organisms like coral to thrive. Instead, the corals found in this exhibit rely on chemosynthesis, deriving their nutrition from inorganic compounds. These deep reef corals have a distinct appearance, being long, thin, and branch-like compared to their shallow-water counterparts. Despite the challenging conditions, the deep reef is home to various fascinating creatures, including juvenile blacktip reef sharks (Manō Pā‘ele), also known as shark pups. These fragile young sharks seek shelter in the deep reef to avoid larger predators. 

At the Maui Ocean Center, the curatorial team collects shark pups under a special state permit to provide them a safe environment for growth and to educate visitors about these magnificent creatures. By dispelling misconceptions and fostering understanding, the center aims to contribute to the conservation of sharks and promote their vital role in the marine ecosystem.

Visitors also may encounter a variety of fish species that are adapted to the deep reef environment. These fish have different shapes, sizes, and colors that allow them to thrive in the deep waters. The exhibit may also feature other organisms found in the deep reef, such as crustaceans, mollusks, and other invertebrates that have adapted to survive in the dimly lit and high-pressure conditions. 

The Deep Reef Exhibit provides visitors with a rare opportunity to explore and learn about the mysterious and lesser-known aspects of the ocean. It highlights the importance of understanding and protecting the deep reef ecosystems, which play a crucial role in the overall health and biodiversity of the marine environment.

So come and listen to the stories of the kanaka maoli, Hawai‘i’s first people. Hear how they sailed across the Pacific in double-hulled canoes using the stars as guides. Submerse yourself in their history, culture, and unique traditions — marvel at their profound relationship with the land (mauka) and the sea (makai). Learn to say a few words in ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i, the living language of this place.

Hawaiians and the sea

Maui Ocean Center’s Sphere breaks the deep-sea barrier and brings you eye-to-eye with Maui’s humpback whales in their realm beneath the waves. Explore the kingdom of these incredible ocean mammals in our 3D Sphere experience. 

Join us at one of  Maui’s best attractions: the new Humpbacks of Hawaiʻi Exhibit & Sphere. The Sphere is open every day between 10 am and 4:30 pm, with showings running every half hour. No reservations are required. The Sphere is not suitable for keiki (children) under 4 years old.

Explore their world and learn their secrets. Discover the dynamic life, journeys, and social bonds of these intelligent and spiritual creatures under the sea in the first-of-its-kind 3D Sphere, only at Maui Ocean Center.

Humpbacks of Hawaiʻi Exhibit and The Sphere

Kaho‘olawe has long been a sacred and storied place for Native Hawaiians. Steeped in cultural and historical significance, the uninhabited island was once a center for celestial navigation training, agriculture, and spiritual practice. Kaho‘olawe’s modern history is marked by an era of intense U.S. military target practice and the Native Hawaiian movement to reclaim and restore the island.

Maui Ocean Center unveiled Kaho‘olawe: A Story of History and Healing to commemorate the sacred island’s past, present, and future.

Created in collaboration with the Kaho‘olawe Island Reserve Commission (KIRC), Maui Ocean Center has supplemented KIRC’s previously exhibited content from the Smithsonian and Bishop Museum to provide additional insight into Kaho‘olawe’s role in navigation, the marine life that inhabits its waters, and the role of KIRC and their volunteers. Designed to show the power of change, both good and bad, the exhibit follows Kaho‘olawe’s development timeline from the first settlement to current restoration projects.

Illustrating the culture, geography, history, and restoration of the island, the exhibit evokes hope for the future of Kaho‘olawe and each individual’s power to effect change.

Kaho'olawe

The Mid Reef Exhibit at the Maui Ocean Center offers a unique experience as it exclusively showcases marine animals found in Hawaiian waters. With a dedicated curatorial team that collects and releases organisms under a special state permit, the exhibit boasts a dynamic and ever-changing population.

Within the Mid Reef exhibit, visitors can marvel at over 20 different species of reef fish, providing a realistic representation of the thriving reef community in Hawaiʻi. Each fish’s design is perfectly adapted to its specific ecological role. Fish with similar physical characteristics often belong to the same family, indicating their relatedness. 

Hawaiian waters are home to several easily identifiable fish families. For example, the surgeonfish family displays a distinctive sharp spine resembling a surgeon’s scalpel at the base of their tails. The unicorn fish family features a conical structure on their heads or two sets of spines at the base of their tails. Butterflyfish (Lauwiliwili nukunuku ‘oi‘oi), known for their pointed mouths and vibrant bodies, are specialized in feeding on tiny coral polyps and worms. Triggerfish possess powerful jaws and unique trigger-like fins that serve as a self-defense mechanism. The wrasse family (hīnālea) showcases various shapes, sizes, and colors, utilizing their strong pectoral fins for propulsion.

 

Among the fascinating species in the exhibit, keep an eye out for the Hawaiian cleaner wrasse. This particular wrasse engages in symbiotic cleaning behavior, picking off parasites and dead skin cells from other fish. Such intricate interactions highlight the importance of reef fish in maintaining the overall health of coral reef ecosystems.

Mid Reef

Nursery Bay highlights the early life stages of reef fish and other marine species found in Hawaiʻi’s coastal waters. This exhibit showcases how shallow, protected environments serve as critical nurseries where young animals can grow, feed, and develop before moving to deeper reef habitats. Visitors learn about life cycles, reef ecosystems, and the importance of preserving these natural nursery areas for the long-term health of the ocean.

Nursery Bay

The Open Ocean Exhibit is home to a stunning variety of sharks and rays found in Hawaiian waters. Inside the exhibit, you’ll find over 50 different species of fish, totaling several hundred individuals. The population is ever-changing as our curatorial team brings in new animals and releases others so visitors can always expect something new during each visit.

The exhibit also features a walkthrough underwater tunnel that allows visitors to feel as though they are surrounded by the ocean. The tunnel offers a 360-degree view, giving you the opportunity to observe marine life from all angles and get an up-close look at the incredible biodiversity of the open ocean.

Open Ocean

The Shallow Reef Exhibit offers a glimpse into the intricate and diverse components of a Hawaiian coral reef ecosystem.  Despite their rocky appearance, corals are fascinating animals belonging to the cnidarian group, just like sea jellies and anemones. Each coral polyp, though small, contributes to the colony’s overall structure by secreting calcium carbonate, which builds up over time to form the entire reef.

Beyond their structural role, corals provide vital food and shelter for other reef inhabitants. They capture and consume plankton using their tentacles and stinging cells, but they also rely on a symbiotic relationship with tiny algae called zooxanthellae. These algae live within the coral tissue, providing nutrients through photosynthesis and giving corals their vibrant colors.

Shallow Reef

The Surge Zone explores one of the most dynamic marine environments along Hawaiʻi’s shoreline, where waves, tides, and currents constantly shape life. This exhibit features species specially adapted to withstand powerful water movement, strong wave action, and rapid changes in conditions. Visitors learn how these resilient organisms cling, shelter, and thrive in a habitat where only the most adaptable survive, highlighting the remarkable diversity of life along Maui’s rocky coasts.

Surge Zone

The Tide Pool exhibit introduces visitors to the shallow coastal zones where land and sea meet. These environments experience dramatic changes in water level, temperature, and salinity as tides rise and fall. Featuring marine animals adapted to survive exposure, wave action, and shifting conditions, the Tide Pool highlights the resilience of Hawaiʻi’s shoreline species and the important role these habitats play in coastal ecosystems.

Tide Pool

Get acquainted with the Hawaiian green sea turtle, one of Earth’s most ancient animals. Featuring both a surface and underwater view of Hawaiʻi’s beloved honu (turtles), this exhibit has up to six sea turtles on display at all times.

Native to Hawaiʻi, the green sea turtle is the largest hard-shelled sea turtle in the world, reaching lengths of up to four feet and weighing in at over 300 pounds in adulthood.

Turtle Lagoon

The Underwater Tunnel offers a fully immersive view into Hawaiʻi’s marine ecosystems, allowing visitors to walk beneath the surface while surrounded by ocean life. From schooling reef fish to larger pelagic species, this exhibit reveals how animals move, interact, and share space in open-water and reef environments. By observing these species from below, visitors gain a deeper understanding of marine behavior, predator–prey relationships, and the interconnected nature of Hawaiʻi’s ocean habitats. The tunnel experience emphasizes the scale, diversity, and balance of life beneath the waves, encouraging a greater appreciation for ocean conservation.
